We recommend using the highest-quality materials you can afford for one simple reason: longevity. A high-quality paint generally doubles the lifespan of a paint job. It's also a good value, as paint costs very little compared to labor. In other words, it's far more expensive to paint your home two to three times in a 20-year period using cheap paint and mediocre prep than it is to paint it once with thorough preparation and top-quality paint.
We prefer Sherwin-Williams, Rodda, and Miller paints and primers. These companies offer a full range of product selections—from high-end paints with lifetime warranties to more basic lines better suited for maintenance painting. Among the notable choices are Sherwin-Williams' Duration and SuperPaint lines and Rodda's Ultimate paint.
Environmentally concerned customers can also opt for Rodda's line of Green Seal-approved paints. Named Horizon, the paints are odor-free, 99.6 percent free of solvents, and contain virtually no polluting volatile organic compounds. Sherwin-Williams has also introduced an interior Duration paint with a GreenSmart designation.
